If you love someone living with dementia, you’re living with it too.
That’s the message behind the new campaign from Dementia UK which is launching today. It doesn’t just affect the person with the diagnosis – everyone around them is also affected. And with one in two of us impacted by dementia in our lifetime – whether by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both – it’s a message that’s as vital as ever. Our ‘Living with dementia’ guide is here to help you through the daily challenges of dementia. It’s packed with expert advice from our specialist nurses on everything from getting a diagnosis to coping with changes in behaviour and planning for the future, along with practical tips from people living with dementia and their families.

Many people living with Dementia feel that having support along their journey will maximise independent living and prevent a crisis. The Dementia Coordinator Service, delivered by Help & Care, is committed to supporting people to live well with Dementia.
The service is available to everyone across Dorset, age 18 and over including support for immediate carers and loved ones. A referral to a Dementia Coordinator is made by the Memory Assessment Service at Dorset Healthcare – once a diagnosis has been confirmed. However, we accept self-referrals, referrals from GPs and other stakeholders as long as a diagnosis of Dementia is confirmed.
Our Support and Advice Includes:
- Information relating to the diagnosis and its prognosis.
- Coping with memory loss.
- Benefits entitlement and how to claim.
- Information on care options and how to access these.
- Liaising with agencies, groups, clubs and other community based support resources on behalf of the service user, if required.
- Advice and guidance for a carer or family.
- Information on driving with dementia and legal requirements.
- Referral to Age UK for Cognitive Stimulation therapy if applicable.
- A dedicated Early Onset Dementia Coordinator for those diagnosed aged 65 and under.
This list is not exhaustive, but does highlight the expertise, experience, and knowledge available. Our service is non-clinical, so any questions relating to clinical issues or medication should be addressed to the relevant GP.
